Career Path For Chartered Accountancy (India)

The chartered accountant or CA is responsible for taxation, auditing, financial planning and accounting for a firm. It is a highly challenging but rewarding job. It offers lucrative career prospects and can open a wide array of avenues in the fields of finance, fund management and investment consultancy.  


An overview

The professional course of chartered accountancy is conducted by the New Delhi–based Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The body has four other regional offices in Calcutta, Chennai, Kanpur and Mumbai along with 81 further units under these centers. There process of becoming a CA involves appearing for the CPT, IPCC and FC. The CPT stands for Common Proficiency Test and is the entry-level examination covering four subjects – Accounting, General Economics, Quantitative Aptitude and Mercantile Laws. The IPCC is the Integrated Professional Competence Course which is the first step of the curriculum wherein the working knowledge of subjects is covered. The topics include business strategies, business communication, taxes, audit and information technology.


CA Final consists of advanced application knowledge of key subjects like strategic financial management, financial reporting, advanced management accounting, professional ethics, advanced auditing plus information systems control and audit. Additionally, it includes principles of e-governance, international taxation, VAT and corporate and allied laws. Lastly, Articleship can be pursued post Group I of IPCC. Aspirants register with experienced CAs to serve for three years. During this period, articles acquire the technical knowledge of the work and are eventually given bigger assignments with lesser supervision. The articled clerks are given a stipend for this duration.


Making a beginning

In today’s competitive world, a student seeking to build a career as a chartered accountant must start early. A student can sign up with the Board of Studies and train for entry level tests while studying 10+2. Also, it is advisable to opt for mathematics as a subject. Students from the commerce stream certainly get an advantage as they are well-versed with accounts and business studies.


The cost of education

Unlike other professional courses, the cost or fee for becoming a chartered accountant is comparatively less. For registering for the IPPC you only have to pay Rs. 9000 and CPT fee is just Rs. 6700. All this is inclusive of the price of the study material.

Once their training is completed, candidates have to become members of the ICAI before they commence practicing as CAs. The members then have to acquire a Certificate of Practice from the ICAI which comes with an annual fee of Rs. 400. Once you become a member and get the certificate, you can’t work for any other entity without seeking permission from the council. The members are only allowed to work in areas specified under the CA regulations.


Going by the growth of the Indian economy over the past five years, the country requires between 7,500 and 10,000 new CAs each year.


Pay package

Candidates with a CA inter-qualification can earn from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 15,000, based on the type of firm they join. Remuneration is usually higher for holding additional qualifications like an MBA or M.Com. In smaller towns, the salaries may even start at Rs. 5,000 a month.


For those who have cleared CA Final or FCA, the starting pay ranges between Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 30,000, depending on what type of firm it is and also the economic conditions. A fully-qualified and experienced CA can expect to earn somewhere between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 75,000 after an experience of 5 years with a reputed firm.
