The term accountant brings to mind some number cruncher buried in spreadsheets, doing the kind of work that makes the rest of the corporate world seem a non-stop roller coaster by comparison.

So what does accounting really consist of?

The following infographic, which pays tribute to the accounting world, notes that it segments into the following:

  • Auditing, 44.7 percent: Perhaps this is why accounting gets a bad rap. When there’s a discrepancy in the books or some other bookkeeping problem, auditors get called.
  • Corporate tax services, 21.8 percent: Anyone who’s run a business knows the wide array of duties and challenges it can present. Outsourcing specialized services like the annual filing of taxes is a must.
  • Consulting, 17.4 percent: A general catch-all term, consultants in the accounting industry can be brought in to trim expenses or offer general advice, on a contractual or project basis.
  • General accounting, 16.1 percent: This applies to everything else.
